The Dancing Cat’s Matching Challenge

The Dancing Cat is delighted to celebrate our 9th anniversary this month! We feel like we are on cloud nine when we think of all that we have achieved together since 2015. From welcoming thousands of visitors, to finding homes for over 1,500 formerly homeless cats, we have so many amazing memories to reflect upon. The Dancing Cat has so much more to do for our community, and we need your help to keep going. A small group of supporters has offered a challenge grant! This group has pledged to match all donations between now and the end of May, up to a total of $90,000! Donations during this time by our cat-loving community will be doubled, thanks to our challenge grant.

How the funds will be used

The Dancing Cat's mission is twofold; to rescue adult cats from the San Jose Animal Care Center, and to create a community of cat lovers in Silicon Valley. As in life, one of the realities of rescue is negotiating health and healing. We truly believe every life matters, and we often rescue wonderful cats with known health conditions.  Inevitably we also rescue cats with health concerns that do not reveal themselves until after they are in our foster homes. At any given time, we find ourselves caring for cats with heart conditions, kidney disease, and ringworm. We go to great lengths on behalf of these cats: we have used cutting-edge medication for cats with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), and seek out alternative therapies for cats with conditions that traditional medicine cannot treat. We consult with specialists as needed, and we do what we can so that every cat has his or her best chance of living a long and healthy life.

We often face challenges in obtaining veterinary care for our cats. Our vets are booked out weeks and sometimes months in advance, which extends the time we care for them before they can be adopted. The cost of vet visits, lab work, and medications have escalated in recent years. The San Jose shelter is often stretched beyond its capacity for care, and often cannot provide basic veterinary care to the cats we rescue.

Between now and May 31, a very generous group of donors has come to the rescue and together offered a challenge grant in the amount of $90,000. All donations that are made will be matched one-for-one, up to the total challenge amount. We’re very grateful for this opportunity to replenish our savings. All funds will be used to support the health and wellbeing of the cats in our care.

The story of Magnus

Magnus arrived to our lounge in a most uncommon manner: he was abandoned on our doorstep one rainy January morning at 5am. Our priority in these cases is to make sure the cat is safe and not critically ill before making a plan for their care. Magnus was taken to the vet where they discovered he had been shot in the neck with a pellet gun. Surgery to remove the pellet was a success and he recuperated in one of our excellent foster homes.

Playful and gregarious Magnus wasn’t going to let anything slow him down. He pounced, played, and zoomied right into the heart of his new family. He is now living a full, happy life with his parents, 2 little human siblings and a canine sister.

The cost of Magnus’ care was over $1000. Your donations will help to cover unforseen expenses like this.
