The Dancing Cat’s 10th Anniversary Matching Challenge

To celebrate our 10th year of cat adoptions and help us continue our commitment to the most vulnerable cats, The Dancing Cat is delighted to announce our goal of raising $100,000! We are thrilled to have reached this momentous milestone together with you, our cat-loving community, and are heartened by the impact we continue to have here in San José. Between now and July 31st, a very generous group of donors has come to the rescue and together offered us a challenge grant in the amount of $100,000. This means your tax-deductible donations will be doubled, and we have a chance to raise up to $200,000! We’re very grateful for this opportunity to replenish our savings and humbly ask for your support in honor and celebration of our 10 years of service to cats and people in the South Bay. A donation of any size helps us reach our goal and is deeply appreciated. Thank you for your kind generosity.

How the funds will be used

The Dancing Cat's mission is twofold; to rescue cats from the San Jose Animal Care Center, and to create a community of cat lovers. As in life, one of the realities of rescue is negotiating health and healing. We truly believe every life matters, and we rescue wonderful cats with known health conditions. Inevitably we also rescue cats with health concerns that do not reveal themselves until after they are in our foster homes. At any given time, we find ourselves caring for cats with conditions such as heart disease, kidney disease, dental disease, and ringworm. We go to great lengths on behalf of these cats. For example, we use newly available medication for cats with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), until recently a virus that was nearly always fatal. We consult with specialists as needed, and we do what we can so that every cat has his or her best chance of living a long and healthy life.

Wabi-Sabi’s story

Wabi-sabi is a sweet, high-energy boy with a heart full of love and a little extra jazz in his step. There is a swagger to this handsome fella's walk that can make certain movements a little unstable, so he should be supervised when climbing up high.

We were contacted by shelter staff about this cat when he was a tiny kitten named Wabi. He arrived at the shelter lethargic, dehydrated, and infested with fleas. His left eye was crusted shut, and he was curled up in a little ball, not wanting to use back legs. Since his little belly was bloated, the shelter staff suspected Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), which is deadly if left untreated. As we have experience treating cats with FIP, we stepped up to take him into one of our loving foster homes. It wasn't long after joining The Dancing Cat and starting treatment for FIP that Wabi showed his playful and snuggly side.

While Wabi’s energy and appetite grew strong, his back legs remained weak. We searched for other possible causes for his unstable movements. Based on misaligned teeth and lack of coordination in his back legs, our vet suggested perhaps there may have been a past physical trauma to this kitty’s body.

With time and consistent care, courageous Wabi is now ready to be adopted into a loving home. He has blossomed into a confident, affectionate buddy. He loves to be near his people — especially if there’s a good TV show to watch or a cozy lap to curl up in. He is playful and full of his own unique zoomies.

His full name, Wabi-sabi, comes from the Japanese concept that there is beauty in imperfection. Like the feline Wabi-sabi, we all appreciate the unique qualities that come with age and experience, and we seek to find peace and beauty in the simple and the imperfect.

Your donations help us rescue cats like Wabi-sabi who need a little medical exploration and a chance to show that being different is not a deal breaker!
